TGC: D.A. Carson on Luke 9
D.A. Carson tackled Luke 9 at TGC13 and Christ’s journey to Jerusalem. My notes on his sermon are below.
In his own time, Jesus is the misunderstood Messiah. But the readers see what his contemporaries didn’t, that Jesus is set on going to Jerusalem.
Jesus stands in line with Israel’s greatest prophets but he utterly outstrips them. The word used in Luke 31 is ‘exodus’ Jesus’ departure from this earth is coming.
Jesus announces his coming betrayal, but his disciples cannot understand.
Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem will end with his death, but nevertheless he forbids the destruction of the Samaritan village that rejected him in 9:51
Your identity is bound up in its writing in the book of life, your election. Your identity is not your ministry.
Carson concluded by rejecting any attempt to separate the teachings of Christ from his death and resurrection. ‘Away with all attempts to drive a wedge between Jesus’ teachings and his death.’ Jesus knew the whole time what was coming. His face was set for Jerusalem.
Jesus resolved to go to Jerusalem.
